Can you paddle board with your dog?
So you’ve mastered solo paddle boarding and now want to take your trips to the next level by sharing your adventures with your furry friend. As long as you take the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of both you and your dog it can be a fantastic way to enjoy the water. Here are some points you should consider before heading out on your SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard)
Choose the right equipment:
The first step in paddle boarding with a dog is to choose the right equipment. Look for a board that is large and stable enough to accommodate both you and your dog, we have found our 11ft board to be most popular for joint paddling. Consider using a leash or harness to keep your dog secure. You may also want to consider purchasing a life jacket or flotation device for your dog, in case of any accidents.
Train your dog:
Before you take your dog paddle boarding, it's important to train them to behave on the water. This will help to ensure the safety of both you and your dog, and will make the experience more enjoyable for everyone. You can inflate your board on land and use positive reinforcement to get your dog used to sitting on the board.
Start slowly:
When you're first starting out with paddle boarding and your dog, it's important to start slowly and build up to longer paddles. This will give your dog time to get used to the sensation of being on the water and the movement of the board. It's also a good idea to keep your first paddles in calm, sheltered waters, to give your dog a chance to get comfortable.
Stay safe:
As with any time on the water, it's important to stay safe when paddle boarding with a dog. Be aware of the weather and water conditions, and use common sense to avoid hazards. It's also a good idea to paddle with a partner or in a group and to let someone know where you're going and when you'll be back.
